I had an Amazon Prime account for years. I was a student when I got it, which meant that I was able to get it at a deep discount. However, when it came time to renew the account this past year, I opted not to do so. Therefore, I have to think carefully about whether or not I want to participate in Amazon Prime Day this year. If I do, then I have to get a new Amazon Prime account. After all, the sales only count if you have that membership.
Why I Didn’t Renew My Amazon Prime Account
There were definitely a lot of things that I liked about my account. However, I ultimately decided that I didn’t need it.
For example, I did enjoy watching movies and TV shows through Prime video. However, there are many different options for viewing television online. I determined that I had enough other choices that I didn’t really need what was on Prime Video. Occasionally, I’ll find a show there that I want to watch, but it’s less expensive to just buy the season outright than to pay for an annual account.
Likewise, I felt the same about streaming music, Kindle reading, and using the site’s online photo storage. I have other options for those things that are as good as or better than Amazon Prime.
Plus, I had originally thought I really wanted to take advantage of Prime’s free two-day shipping. (They even offer free same-day shipping now.) However, there’s nothing I ever need that fast. I can get free shipping from Amazon by accepting slower shipments. It works for me.
Is Amazon Prime Worth It?
Amazon Prime would definitely be worth it if I also wanted to take advantage of the aforementioned services throughout the year. So, if you don’t have a Prime account, then that’s a factor to consider.
Also, Amazon offers Prime discounts for students as well as low-income individuals with an EBT or Medicaid card. The rate is considerable lower and therefore could well be worth it.
If you have Amazon Prime, then you can get 20% discounts on a wide array of items throughout the year. This can more than make up for the cost of the membership, particularly if you get that discounted rate. So you have to weigh those savings against the cost to determine if it’s worth it for you.
Would It Be Worth It To Get an Amazon Prime Account for Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day is coming up. It’s a two-day event filled with deals on all different types of items. If I want to take advantage of any of those deals, I’d have to get an account again. Would it be worth it?
Here are three things to know to help you decide for yourself:
- You can get a 30-day free membership.
- In addition to the annual membership, you can now opt to pay month-to-month.
- Although the best deals will be on July 15th and 16th, there are pre-sale deals as well.
- If you get a membership then shop at Whole Foods then spend $10 at Whole Foods, you’ll get $10 to spend on Amazon Prime Day. Therefore, you can easily start earning back some of the cost of the membership.
Ultimately, I’ve decided that it’s not going to be worth it for me this year. There aren’t any items that I need to buy. There are no big ticket purchases that I’ve been holding off on making until I get a deal. If there were, it would be worth it. Next year, it might be worth it. But each person has to determine that for themselves each year. Think carefully about whether or not spending on Amazon Prime Day makes sense for you.
